What is a W2-C form?
A W2-C form is provided by the IRS and SSA so that employers can correct any misconceptions and errors in previously completed W-2 forms and/or related documents.
What I need the W2-C for?
The purpose of using the W2-C is to register all corrections of all errors in W-2, IRS and SSA tax refunds, allowance payments, and tax invoices. The submitter must provide their personal information, as well as the employer’s information. They will also need tax information for the year the error occurred. The applicant will have to list the previously reported taxes and the corrected data. This ensures that the IRS can correct the W-2 form with the correct information. Depending on how you filed your tax returns, you may need to mail this form or file it online.
Filling out the W2-C
To fill out Form W2-C, you have to provide the following information:
Section 1: Personal Information
- Employer’s name and valid address;
- Identification Number (EIN);
- Tax year;
- The correct SSN;
- Employee’s previously reported SSN and name;
- Employee’s correct name and address.
Section 2: Previously Reported Information;
Section 3: Correct Information;
Section 4: State Correction Information;
Section 5: Locality Correction Information (wages, tips, income tax, and locality name).
