What is the IRS W-9 Form?

The IRS W-9 Form or presently a Taxpayer Identification (TIN) and Certification Form is a federal document required for businesses to meet Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations of the US. It is necessary to fill the form prior to issuing a contract or a purchase order of any type. It collects information about the applicant’s legal businesses, including TIN, SSN, EIN, etc.

What I need the IRS W-9 Form for?

IRS W-9 Form:

• Is needed to let your business meet IRS federal regulations for legal issuing of contracts and processing purchasing orders;
• Is filled by US business owners who are obliged to be taxpayers;
• Is not suitable for LLC businesses.

There is no submission deadline, but the form must be filled and sent to IRS not later than your business starts to conduct financial operations.

Filling out IRS W-9 Form

First, you should get acquainted with IRS regulations and form requirements in the first and second sections. Next, you have to provide your real name and the business name if it is different from the first and enter the valid address of your business. The address must be the actual place of business operations. The remittance address can be the same or different, but it should be in the same state. The following section requires your Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number instead. In the last box, you have to define the type of your business (NFP, Government, Sole Proprietor, Partner) and ownership type (Individual, Corporation, etc.) Send the filled form to the nearest local Internal Revenue Service office of your state. Notice that specific requirements and permissions to personal information processing may vary in different states.
