What is Form I-539?

Form I-539 is the Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Nonimmigrants in the United States may use it to apply for an extension of stay or a change to another nonimmigrant status, except as noted in the “Who May Not File Form I-539” section of the instructions.

Nonimmigrant F-1 or M-1 students applying for reinstatement may also use it.

Requests for extension of stay in, or change of status to, certain employment-based classifications must be filed using Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, rather than Form I-539.

Some Form I-539 requests can be filed online instead; the USCIS page on filing Form I-539 online lists the conditions and the requests it covers.

Each co-applicant included on Form I-539 must complete a separate Form I-539A; this page offers Form I-539 only.

For a paper Form I-539 application, USCIS will not accept a stamped or typewritten name in place of a required signature.

For paper filing, a photocopy, fax, or scan can satisfy the signature requirement only if it is a copy of the original request or document containing the handwritten ink signature.
