Understanding the Missouri Property Tax Credit Form (MO-PTS)
The Missouri Property Tax Credit Claim Form, also known as Form MO-PTS, is a crucial document for Missouri residents who are 65 or older, disabled, 100% disabled veterans as a result of military service or their surviving spouses aged 60 and above receiving benefits. This form is filed alongside your Missouri state tax return Form MO-1040 or MO-1040P. Its primary purpose is to provide eligible residents with a property tax credit, helping to alleviate the financial burden of property taxes.
How to Fill Out the MO-PTS Form
Filling out the MO Property Tax Credit Form might seem daunting, but by following these simple steps, you can complete it with ease:
- Personal Information: Start by filling out your personal information, including your name, address, and Social Security number on the form.
- Select Your Qualification: Next, you need to choose only one qualification that fits you best from the options given:
- If you are 65 years of age or older, attach Form SSA-1099
- For 100% disabled veterans, attach the letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- If 100% disabled, attach the letter from Social Security Administration or Form SSA-1099.
- As a surviving spouse aged 60 or older, attach Form SSA-1099.
- Income Details: Enter your income details as it appears on Form MO-1040, Line 6, including nontaxable social security benefits, pensions, annuities, rental income, and any veterans payments or public assistance received.
- Property Information: For property owners, enter the total amount of property tax paid, excluding special assessments or $1,100, whichever is less. Renters are asked to enter the amount from their Certification of Rent Paid.
- Net Household Income: Calculate your net household income by subtracting the specified deductions from your total income. This sum will determine eligibility for the claim.
- Tax Credit Calculation: Refer to the chart in the MO-1040 instructions (pages 49-51) to calculate your property tax credit. Enter the calculated figure on Form MO-1040, Line 43.
