Step 1: Your Info

Start by providing your personal information, including your name, address, and social security number. If you're married and filing jointly, you must also provide your spouse's social security number. Select the appropriate boxes that apply to your situation, such as your filing status and whether you're 65 or older, blind, or 100% disabled.

Step 2: Income

Next, you'll need to declare your income. Enter your federal adjusted gross income from your federal return on Line 1. If any state income tax refund is included in your federal adjusted gross income, enter it on Line 2. The total Missouri adjusted gross income should be entered on Line 3.

Step 3: Deductions

The MO state tax form 1040A allows for various deductions. These include the Missouri standard deduction or itemized deductions (Line 5), additional exemption for head of household and qualified widow(er) (Line 6), and long-term care insurance deduction (Line 7). The total deductions should be added and entered on Line 8.

Step 4: Tax Calculation

Subtract Line 8 from Line 3 to get your Missouri taxable income and enter it on Line 9. Use the tax chart provided in the form instructions to figure the tax and enter it on Line 10. Enter the Missouri tax withheld from your Form(s) W-2 and 1099 on Line 11. If you made any Missouri estimated tax payments for 2022, enter them on Line 12. Add Lines 11 and 12 to get your total payments and enter it on Line 13.

Step 5: Refund or Amount Due

If Line 13 is more than Line 10, enter the difference on Line 14. This is your overpayment. If you want any amount of your overpayment to be applied to your 2023 estimated tax, enter it on Line 15. If Line 13 is less than Line 10, enter the difference on Line 19. This is the amount you owe.

Step 6: Trust Fund Donations

The MO 1040A form also allows you to make donations to various trust funds. Enter the amount of your donation in the appropriate trust fund boxes on Line 16.

Step 7: Sign and Date

Finally, sign and date the form. If you're filing jointly, both you and your spouse need to sign. If you paid a tax return preparer to complete your return, they should also sign the form and provide their information.

Remember to attach copies of your Form(s) W-2 and 1099, and any other necessary documents, before mailing the form to the Missouri Department of Revenue. If you have an approved federal extension, attach a copy of Federal Extension (Form 4868).
