According to the US Department of Education, a 1098-E form is a document used for compensating student loans. This tax form helps with figuring student loan interest deductibility in the course of your trade or business. It states the amount of interest a student paid on their loans throughout a calendar year. 

What do I need Form 1098-E for?

You may get an online version of the 1098-E Student Loan Interest Statement via email or receive a paper document by mail from a lender if:

  • the sum you paid during the year to cover your student loan interest is $600 or more;
  • you have to deduct a portion of the paid interest on your 2022 federal tax return.

How to Fill Out Form 1098-E in 2024?

Step 4: In box 2, mark loan origination fees or capitalized interest which you didn’t report in box 1, in case your loans were undertaken prior to September 1, 2004.
