What is IRS 1099-MISC?

IRS 1099-MISC is a form that states the number of payments received by an independent or freelance contractor from one person or business company. All the payments are taxable. This form was created to help self-employed workers to report their income or one time job, even if it is not stable.

What I need the IRS 1099-MISC for?

  • IRS 1099-MISC is required to fill out for those who hire freelancers or independent employees for the services related to your business but with a total amount of payment over $600 yearly;
  • IRS 1099-MISC form must be filled out when you pay $10 royalties and broker payments as dividends or in lieu of tax-exempt interest.

You don’t have to submit this form if you pay for household or personal services. They are considered private. It is necessary to file this form before January 31.

Filling out IRS 1099-MISC

There are brief details about the contractor and employers that must be included in the form. There are 8 pages in the document. But don’t worry, it is not that hard to fill out as it contains detailed instructions. Pages 1, 5, and 7 contain only explanations and guidance. You will start with the 2nd page.

  • Start with providing the information about payer: company address, name, contact phone;
  • Tax payment ID number;
  • Contactor’s name and SSN, and ID number, phone, and address.

After you finish all the parts of the document, you will have to send them to different institutions. Depending on the purpose of the form, it can be sent to the IRS, recipient of the payment, state tax department. You can send copies to all these institutions.
