  5. Fill out the amount of state and local tax deduction claimed on federal Form 1040, Schedule A, line 5a in Section 10.
  6. Fill out the total additions to federal income in Section 11, which can be found on PIT-ADJ, line 5. Attach PIT-ADJ.
  7. Fill out the federal standard or itemized deduction amount in Section 12, which can be found on federal Form 1040 or 1040SR, line 12.
  8. Fill out the deduction for certain dependents.
  9. Fill out the New Mexico low- and middle-income tax exemption.
  10. Fill out the total deductions and exemptions from federal income. Attach PIT-ADJ.
  11. Fill out the medical care expense deduction. You must complete both lines 16 and 16a or the deduction will be denied.
  12. Calculate the New Mexico taxable income in Section 17 by adding lines 9, 10, and 11, then subtracting lines 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16.
  13. Calculate the New Mexico tax amount on line 17 or from PIT-B, line 14 in Section 18. From Rate Table = R. From PIT-B, line 14 = B.
  14. Fill out any additional amount for tax on lump-sum distributions.
  15. Fill out any credit for taxes paid to another state. You must have been a New Mexico resident during all or part of the year. Include a copy of the other state's return.
  16. Fill out any business-related income tax credits applied from Schedule PIT-CR, line A in Section 21. Attach PIT-CR.
  17. Calculate the net New Mexico income tax in Section 22 by adding lines 18 and 19, then subtracting lines 20 and 21.
  18. Fill out the exemptions in Section 6, including taxpayer, spouse, dependents, and other dependents reported on federal Form 1040.
  19. Fill out the residency status for taxpayer and spouse in Section 1e and 2e.
  20. Fill out the filing status, marking only one box.
  21. Fill out any refundable business-related income tax credits from Schedule PIT-CR, line B in Section 26. Attach PIT-CR.
  22. Fill out any New Mexico income tax withheld. Attach annual statements of income and withholding.
  23. Fill out any New Mexico income tax withheld from oil and gas proceeds. Attach 1099-MISC or RPD-41285.
  24. Calculate the total payments and credits in Section 32 by adding lines 24 through 31.
  25. Calculate the amount to be refunded to you in Section 42 by subtracting lines 40 and 41 from line 39.
  26. Sign and date the form in Section 35 and 36. If filing jointly, both must sign.
  27. Answer the required question in Section RE.4.
  28. Attach any necessary schedules and forms as instructed throughout the form.
  29. File the completed form by mail or online through Taxpayer Access Point (TAP). If filing an amended return, mark the appropriate box in Section 1 and include the reason for amending in Section 26.
