Form 1098-MA Mortgage Assistance Payments is a document used to report mortgage payouts made by or on behalf of homeowners and mortgage support transactions made. It serves informational purposes only and is not reported on the tax return.

What Do I Need Form 1098-MA For?

This fillable document is necessary to report payments made by:

• HFA (State Housing Finance Agency) in compliance with the Housing Finance Agency Innovation Fund for the Hardest Hit Housing Markets;
• payments made by a taxpayer (or householder mortgage payments) under these programs;
• for tax return preparation purposes, IRS Form 1098-MA can be used to guarantee that a taxpayer who is including mortgage interest as an itemized subtraction only reports the mortgage interest they really paid.

How to Fill Out Form 1098-MA?

Step 2: Provide the homeowner's and filers' data in the left column.
Step 3: In box 1, enter the total amount of householder mortgage payments and State HFA mortgage assistance payouts.

Step 5: Indicate the sum of mortgage payments the homeowner paid to the State HFA in box 3.

Note that this form has no other impact on taxes, so don't include mortgage assistance payouts as income. Apply another specialized document that substitutes an IRS Form 1098-MA.
