What is a Form 944?
The IRS Form 944 is a three-page federal tax return designed specifically for small businesses. With it, they can report on the work during the year (instead of filing documents quarterly) and calculate their taxes. This paper requires permission from the IRS.
What do I need the 944 Form for?
- If you own a small business and have a small tax liability, you can use this form in place of the standard Form 941.
- What is a 944 form used for? With it, you can report on all taxes collected from your employees and calculate your own liabilities.
- You can only complete this document if your liability is below $1000 per quarter (i.e., $4000 per year) and the IRS has notified you.
- According to the 944 Form instructions, if you have not received permission from the IRS, you have to fill out the standard Form 941.
How to Fill Out Form 944?
Step 1: Enter information about yourself as an employer: personal and trade names, EIN, and full address.
Step 2: Fill in the first part with all the payroll details. Most of the questions here relate to taxes withheld from employees' salaries.
Step 3: The second part of the document is devoted to calculating your tax liability. Depending on the amounts obtained in the previous section, you need to fill in certain lines. See instructions for IRS Form 944 to see which items apply to you.
Step 4: In the third part, you need to answer questions about suspending or stopping wage payments. If none of the statements apply to you, then leave this section blank.
Step 5: Leave third-party designee contacts and sign and date the form.
